Effects of Ginseng Extracts on Systemic Arterial Blood Pressure in Rabbits

Abstract
It has been reported that Ginseng extracts have variable effects on blood pressure. Then the experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of ethanol extract and saponin fraction on blood pressure, the-dose-response dependency and the mechanism of its action in rabbits.
1. When infusing ethanol extract and saponin fraction intravenousely in dose of 25 mg/ kg, systolic and diastolic blood pressure were decreased at the same time from 20-30 seconds after the start of infusion. The drop in diastolic pressure was more prominent.
2. The response of the mean blood pressure to doses of ethanol extract 25 mg/kg, 50 mg/ kg, 100 mg/kg and 200 mg/kg are decreases in the pressure by 6%, 12%, 26% and 41% of the control respectively. In cases of saponin fraction group, the drops in the mean pressures were by 11%, 19%, 35% and 49% of the control.
3. The effect of lowering the blood pressures were not affected by pre-treating the rabbit with propranolol (1 mg/kg), phenoxybenzamine(5 mg/kg) or angiotensin (0. 2-1 ug/kg. min).
The above results suggested that it could not exclude the possibilities of releasing histamine and/or serotonin or inhibition of central nervous system by Ginseng extracts in the lowering of blood pressures, but also the possibilities of direct action on the heart or unknown effect on blood vessels were still remained.
